UNIVERSITY LEVEL COURSES (ULC)
The University Level Courses (ULC) programs are geared towards preparing university bound or current university students in taking their programs. These courses are often a nightmare to the majority of a class - even if students do not fail these courses, they often perform poorly and thus their GPAs are unable to recover. Hundreds of students have found success taking our full-semester courses - see "Teachers" section below for alumni testimonials on our instructors, or visit our Instagram page for testimonials of current Schulich students on our company: @jumpstartacademyto
COURSES OFFERED (schulich bba curriculum):
Statistics (OMIS2050)
Accounting (ACTG2010/ACTG2011/ACTG2020)
Finance (FINE2000)
Operations Management (OMIS2010)
In most prestigious undergraduate programs, the student bodily primarily consists of those who have performed well academically in high school (generally at least 85% average). In these programs however, the median mark is a C+/B across most courses. Being in the top percentile in secondary school is not indicative of whether a student will even place within the top half of the class in University.
In many programs, there are significant dropout rates. Even in top-tier business programs like Schulich, as much as 20% of students fail their first year Statistics and/or Accounting courses. These subjects are notorious for being some of the “scariest” courses, but with a solid foundation, they become easy to master.
We've talked a lot about us, but why do grades still matter in university?
Even as a learning center, we must stress that grades are certainly not everything. A student does not attend classes to simply obtain letters or numbers on a grade report. However, it is certain that marks play a critical role in:
Retaining Scholarships
In many schools, sustaining an A average, which is generally the level required to maintain entry scholarships, is a feat achieved only by less than the top 10%, a loss of that could easily amount to over $5,000 a year.
Finding Employment
In today's competitive job market, all the top-tier positions have certain threshold requires for grade point averages. The most prestigious, high-paying, and renowned jobs in banking and consulting will rarely give a resume a second glance unless an applicants marks are within at least the top 10-15%.
Pursuing Further Education
In order to be considered for entrance into institutions for further education, like medical schools, law schools, and top MBA schools, successful applicants will always require a top tier GPA.
We've talked a lot about why a student may want to seek help, but why with us?
Our Teachers
Jie Dai
Our statistics / business analytics / operations management instructor has been tutoring students for over 8 years, with five years of experience in this course at the University level curriculum. Recently a student himself, Jie Dai has been assisting his peers in various subjects since his first year of study at the Schulich School of Business. Each year, Jie has involved himself with both tutoring and mentoring entry-level students with their studies, as well as adjustment into the University lifestyle. He has a unique teaching approach and is able to easily identify where a student's main struggle lies and develop teaching strategies accordingly to effectively convey ideas and concepts. Now a graduate of the Schulich School of Business, he has instructed well over 200 students throughout his time there and as a teacher with Jumpstart Academy. Needless to say, he is also of excellent academic standing, graduating within the top 3% of his year with a GPA of 3.9/4.0.
Below are testimonials from our alumni:
"One of the many reasons why I chose to stay with Jumpstart for two years is because of Jie’s unique teaching style. Unlike many professors, he is very patient, encouraging, and knows how to clearly explain challenging concepts in depth. Whether I was struggling or not, I found Jumpstart extremely helpful and definitely recommend it to any student!"
-Marianne Velasquez, Schulich BBA 2020, Sales at PepsiCo
"Jie is one of the best tutors I’ve ever come across. I did absolutely horrible on my statistic midterm and I was literally one foot in the grave before the final exam. Jie tutored me for one week before the exam and my grade went up 5 letters. What makes Jie an exceptional tutor is his incredible math skills and his ability to break down complex problems into simplified steps. He has great patience and he takes time to develop methods to help me understand the material. I can vouch that his teaching skills and knowledge on statistics rivals my professor. I am also confident that his other areas of expertise are just as impressive. All in all, I would definitely recommend Jie to anyone who needs help with statistics and other math related subjects."
- Tiga Huang, Schulich BBA 2017, Data Analyst at Initiative
"I had fallen behind on a few chapters of MGMT1050 (statistics), and was having difficulties catching up in the days leading up to my final exam. I turned to Jie for two brief study sessions; and his approach and the subsequent results were phenomenal. He explained statistical concepts in a very easy-to-understand manner, focusing on helping me grasp the theory rather than simply telling me how to solve questions. The result? I finished the course with a high A, and if I had tutored with Jie earlier, I strongly believe I could have earned an A+. Hands down, Jie's personalized and empathetic teaching approach is the one of the best complements towards academic enrichment."
- John Loy-Chin, Schulich BBA 2017, CPA Candidate at PwC
JETHRO KWAN
Our accounting instructor also has long history of teaching. Having assisted younger students since the beginning of high school days, Jethro Kwan is known for his ability to simplify concepts in ways that even those with no background of a topic can understand. Jethro has always had a great understanding of the underlying issues that inhibit students academic performance - in his third year of study, he was the President of the Schulich Protege Program, the school's mentorship program. Despite a professional teaching style, Jethro's classes are always remembered for its welcoming atmosphere in which students feel comfortable to ask, learn, and laugh.
Below are testimonials from our alumni:
"If I could describe Jethro's teaching style in one word, it'd be patient. It's very rare to come across teachers that are genuinely willing to go out of their way and do anything in order for their students to succeed - but Jethro is one of them. Whenever I had a problem, Jethro was always on call 24/7 to answer my questions and was always very thorough in his explanations to ensure that I understood concepts fully. Whether it's gaining that extra boost in your accounting grade, self esteem in the course or motivation, Jethro is someone you can always depend on and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to any student that is looking for a reliable and experienced teacher!"
-Priscilla Wu, Schulich BBA 2018, Product Marketing at Touch Bistro
"Jumpstart was an extremely helpful resource and I enjoyed the sessions immensely! Jethro was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. his knowledge in ACTG was commendable, and he taught in a way that was easy to understand. Whenever I had a question outside of class and I asked Jethro on Facebook, I could rely on a quick and helpful reply. I would greatly recommend Jumpstart to anyone who is looking for approachable teachers and want to get a great mark in school!”
-Rena Gao, Schulich BBA 2019, JD Canadidate at Windsor Faculty of Law
"My experience at Jumpstart was absolutely amazing. Starting from the first class, I felt the return on my investment. The clear explanations and positive learning environment provided me satisfaction. Also, Jethro was extremely helpful both inside and outside the classroom. He was always available whenever I needed him and never failed to help me. For anyone having difficulties in their studies, I highly recommend joining Jumpstart!"
